THOMSON, GA – A 17-year-old high school junior was killed when her car struck an empty log truck on November 30, 2010, about five miles south of Thomson, Georgia. Caution signs warning of logging activity were posted in the area of the crash, the McDuffie Mirror reported. The teenager was believed to be on her way to school when she rounded a sharp curve while traveling northbound on Mount Pleasant Road. She collided with a Kenworth tractor-trailer owned by Haynes Ashmore Logging of Lincolnton as it prepared to turn left onto a logging road, the newspaper reported. Sgt. Ritchie Howard of the Georgia State Patrol post in Grovetown said investigators believe the girl was not wearing a seat belt. The sharp curve in the approach likely contributed to the collision; however, authorities also need to consider that the truck may have been turning into a temporary logging road, without any specific notice to motorist of its existence other than general warnings of logging operations in the area.
