The city of Macon, Georgia is located in central Georgia and has a population of 93,000 making it the sixth largest city in Georgia. Macon is the county seat for Bibb County. Macon is home to Mercer University, Macon State College and Wesleyan College. There are two main trucking routes that converge on the city of Macon: Interstate 75 (I-75) and Interstate 16 (I-16). I-75 travels north to Atlanta and south to Valdosta, Georgia and into Florida. I-16 heads east to Savannah, Georgia and the coastal areas. Interstate 475 (I-475) is a bypass around Macon to connect the portions of I-75 that are north and south of the city. Interstate trucking companies are governed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (“FMCSR”), including trucking operations, driver qualifications, hours of service, maintenance of equipment, insurance, and alcohol and drug testing. Georgia also has state specific regulations governing intrastate trucking companies. Intrastate trucking companies pick up and deliver loads only in the state of Georgia and do not cross state lines. By statute, Georgia has adopted many of the federal regulations as also being applicable to intrastate trucking companies. Under Georgia law, intrastate trucking companies must have minimum insurance of $100,000/ $300,000 in liability coverage. Georgia also has a special exemption for logging trucks from many regulations applicable to other commercial vehicles.
